LIGHT Jam
As LIGHT is heavily inspired by Destiny and a lot of the entries were also influenced by it I decided to try my hand at an element of Destiny 2 I felt didn't live up to its potential; the Infinite Forest. The idea behind the forest; a location built from a selection of pieces which are randomly assembled for each visit seemed like a great fit Destiny and would make an interesting module for LIGHT.
Which brings me to my entry to the jam: Spire. Spire is a mode where you climb a tower of increasing difficulty and gain increasing rewards throughout. This tower is ever shifting and changing, allowing the GM and players to replay as many times as they wish with different outcomes and rewards each time.
The GM creates the encounters the players will face and the players react and overcome them. By splitting the tower into 5 layers, each with 4 encounters, the GM is able to adapt the game while making each encounter distinct and unique.
For the rewards I was inspired by rogue-lite games. You power through randomly generated levels, find new things and bring them back for your next run. However I wanted to have a risk/reward system to punish players for not quitting while they're ahead but reward them with better loot for pushing through and being successful. For this I created the Anvil System.
After beating a guardian at the end of a level you are able to use the Anvil. Your first reward is a random weapon and each subsequent Anvil you reach grants you an additional tag for that weapon. Reaching a new Anvil enhances your rewards and presents a choice: leave with your prize as it is or continue onwards hoping to gain more upgrades. Succeed and your reward will be better but fail and you will lose all of the work you’ve put in on your weapon. I also left the Anvil upgrades up to the players/GM. This way you can add additional tags or weapon types from other modules. LIGHT is a modular game and I wanted Spire to also reflect that.
I also had another idea for a module but couldnt commit the time to making another one before the end of the event. Perhaps in the event of a LIGHT Jam #2 I will pull out the module idea and get it finished up.
